Mirror Reflection #5

They Imprisoned the Man

Standing inside Nelson Mandela's prison cell on Robben Island was difficult to put into words.

This tiny space held a man whose body was confined, yet whose mind, spirit and vision remained free. Mandela spent 18 of his 27 years of imprisonment on this island - but he emerged without surrendering his purpose or allowing bitterness to define his future.

Standing here reminded me that your circumstances may restrict your movement, but they do not have the authority to imprison who you are.

Today, I didn't simply visit a historic place. I stood in the presence of sacrifice, resilience and the unconquerable human spirit.

A humbling moment I will never forget.

Hold the Reins

Tonight's Sunday Mirror Reflection from Kyle Von Stearns on horseback riding, fatherhood, fear, and taking back the reins of your own life.

I've always loved horseback riding.

There's something about sitting on an animal that powerful that teaches you a lesson without saying a word:

You cannot control everything with force.

You must become calm.

You must become centered.

You must trust yourself.

And then - you take the reins.

I taught both of my sons how to ride because I wanted them to experience that feeling for themselves. But looking back, I realize I was teaching them something much bigger:

Respect the power beneath you.

Don't allow fear to make your decisions.

Know when to lead, when to loosen your grip, and when to simply enjoy the ride.

That's life.

We spend so much time trying to control the road that we forget we were built to ride it.

So tonight, as this Sunday comes to a close, ask yourself:

Where have you surrendered the reins of your own life?

Your past doesn't hold them.

Other people's opinions don't hold them.

Fear doesn't hold them.

You do.

Take them back.

And yes... Daddy still looks pretty damn good in a cowboy hat.

Remember who you are.

What Cannot Be Burned

They burned businesses.

They destroyed homes.

They attempted to erase prosperity.

Yet they could not erase memory.

They could not erase ingenuity.

They could not erase resilience.

I keep this photograph in my office as a reminder.

Some history books teach facts.

Some photographs teach identity.

This one reminds me that remembering is an act of resistance.

As America approaches 250 years of independence, I choose to remember those who rose from unimaginable loss and still dared to build again.

Perhaps remembering is more than looking backward.

Perhaps remembering is reclaiming the courage to move forward.
